My ultimate goal in life is to become a director. Becoming a part of the Capa Writing Major was the first step in the direction of this goal. In Capa I aimed to be inspired by my peers, learn and grow to become the director I aspire to be. Throughout the almost two years that I have been here I feel that I get closer with every assignment, critique and interaction.
From sixth to eighth grade I was placed in the “gifted” program and therefore me and my peers were all put on a pedestal compared to all of the other children, but my situation was a bit different. My Mommom worked as a teacher in my middle school, so many of the students in my class thought that she was the one that got me into the class instead of my intelligence. This left me feeling like I had something to prove, like I had to prove to them that I was smart enough to be in the same class as them. This led me down a path of stress and anxiety about all of my academic work, but when I came to Capa it felt like that anxiety drifted away. I noticed that many of my peers felt the same as me.
After three years of feeling like everything had to be perfect, I was in an environment where imperfection was encouraged. I learned that without flaws there would be no room for growth. My peers are all so talented and they have all inspired my own writing. There is no amount of praise that could describe the admiration I have towards all of them. I’m honored to even be able to participate in the classes as them. They have helped me realize so many of my goals and have overall increased my confidence when it comes to writing. The writing teachers are also immensely helpful and encouraging. The four that I’ve so far have helped me fill the gaps in my knowledge of writing. Usually I would never write about myself, but Ms.Harr helped me realize that I could make some interesting stories around my own experiences. I’ve always had very strong opinions about things and sitting through a gruesome hour of Analytical reading and writing as well as Non-fiction two has helped me articulate those thoughts.
Capa’s learning environment is somewhere where I feel that I strive. It's welcoming and comfortable, and that's what I need to be confident in my endeavors. I plan on continuing to enhance my abilities throughout my next two years at Capa and through college. I wish the freshman coming finishing their first year with writers the same transformation I had.
